Preparing Your Pets for Holiday Guests & More

The holiday season may be a little different this year, but chances are you’ll be having more people in your home than you’ve had in a while. Even the most extroverted pet can become anxious or frightened by the sudden arrival of new people, and especially if they’re wearing masks.

Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe & healthy this holiday:

  • Try wearing a mask at home from time to time to get your pet used to humans who are wearing them. Try giving treats whenever you are wearing the mask to create a positive association.
  • Consider putting your pet in another room with toys, treats, water and a bed when having a party or gathering. This way your dog (and especially your cat) will be less stressed. If your pets will be out when guests are in the home, it’s important to make sure they have a safe place to retreat and be left alone, such as a bedroom or crate.
  • Careful with holiday goodies! Chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, macadamia nuts and walnuts are all on the naughty list for pets as these foods can make them seriously ill. Also, beware xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in chewing gum, candy, and peanut butter) which can cause illness and even death.
  • Keep pets away from holly, mistletoe, poinsettias, and lilies, which can all be toxic to animals. And skip the tinsel if you have cats—they’re attracted to shiny objects and you don’t want them eating it, and then spending the holiday at the vet!
